Gardens
The stunningly beautiful award-winning gardens at The Mount Somerset cover approximately four acres and offer extensive views over Quantocks and Blackdown Hills.
The gardens have been developed by Head Gardener Alan Jenks who literally started with a blank canvas when he first arrived at the hotel over five years ago. The gardens have taken on a Victorian Style laid mainly to lawn with flowerbeds, herbaceous borders and rockeries. Since Alan started as head gardener at the Mount Somerset he has twice won the coveted title of Taunton in bloom and has also been runner up twice. Look out for Alan’s regular garden tours on our calendar or events followed by one of our renowned afternoon teas. Alan gives will give a tour of the grounds as well as providing helpful hints and take you through the ongoing restoration of the gardens over the last 5 years.
Alan has planted over 5,000 daffodil bulbs over last two years and the house is very well known in area for our award-winning spring/summer gardens displays. Now that the daffodils are well established, we are now concentrating on planting tulips and wallflowers ready for spring 2010.
There are also cut flower beds allowing the florist to pick fresh flowers from our very own gardens to display within the house.
Looking ahead, we are also hoping to introduce our own mini orchard with mixed fruit trees as well as develop the already established herb garden within hotel grounds.
